Culinary Corner by Wilderness Touring

Duncan Doherty continues the legacy at The Flagship.  It was a sublime Cape winter’s morning as we made our way, with curious excitement, towards Simonstown and The Flagship. We had all been wondering what Duncan had been up to over the past six months and were excited to experience the lunch that had been made so legendary by the late Bruce Robertson.

With the bar set high, we ventured up to the front door where we were met by a bubbly young lady wearing a warm smile who immediately offered us a glass of, you guessed it, bubbly! Kerry was the perfect hostess, and there is no doubt that she and Duncan make a formidable culinary duo. The two captivated our table with interesting (and often comical!) conversation whilst Duncan produced plate after plate of his delicious seafood-orientated cuisine.

The wines were perfectly matched to each dish and every bite revealed another explosion of unique flavours, from white anchovies and olive infused salmon to pickled ginger chilli lime and duck liver parfait. It was a true epicurean masterpiece. The views from the dining room table stretched the entire length of False Bay and as we stood, bubbly in hand, gazing across the ocean, a shout of “Whale!” shattered the tranquil scene. Sure enough, a pod of southern right whales emerged from the azure blue and frolicked in the turquoise sea below us. A casual decision was taken to move outside, where we were served our cheese platters and dessert (with more wine!) whilst lounging around the pool, soaking up the sunshine and viewing the whales.DSC_8591

The experience was heavenly. We highly recommend the Flagship lunch for guests with an interest in worldclass, seafood-inspired cuisine paired with quality wines and served in a homely, interactive environment.
